Vevey, Switzerland (Swan Lake)
Another big train trip (transit day, as we call it) had us arrive after sundown in Vevey, Switzerland. Ed’s old school friend, Andrew stays there (he works for Nestle and the head office is in Vevey, which is near Montreaux). What a beautiful place. The hotel we stayed in was one street back from Lake Geneva. The lake would go all misty, with the mountains behind and white swans would swim by. (Lois said it reminded her of the ballet, Swan Lake). Absolutely gorgeous.
Vevey had lots of interesting sights, upmarket shops in cobbled streets and a few modern shopping centres. Andrew met us and took us by car up to Glacier 3000 for Sasha’s first snow experience.WOW! What was incredible too, was that there was almost noone there…it was so quiet we felt like we had the mountain to ourselves. We had a walk along the ski fields and went for a bobsled ride on the World’s Highest Bobsled Run. Brilliant stuff. Ed and Lois got a bit of “snow-burn”…can you believe it?! We were closer to the sun up there, as well as the reflection off the snow fields. We had a great time throwing snowballs and making snow angels. 3 big kids. We also visited Montreaux and saw Freddy Mercury’s tribute statue. Switzerland is fascinating. We can’t believe the lack of graffiti (well, compared to Italian and Spanish citites!) and how safe it is.A visit to Chateaux Chillon was very special. It was a gorgeous day and we clambered around the castle – one that actually had a moat around it! Andrew and Louise treated us to a swiss barbecue at their place and we walked up to a lovely park and watch the paragliders glide by as the girls had a play. Autumn is so beautiful in Switzerland, we feel really lucky to see it. The trees are green, yellow and orange, plus there is a bit of snow on the mountain peaks. It looks fantastic and has us “ooohing” and “aahing” all day!
For Ed’s birthday we went out for a lovely Indian meal with Andrew, Louise and the girls and finished off the evening with a stroll in the moonlight along lake Geneva. Aaaah……. Another place we’d love to come back to (especially with a stronger exchange rate!)
