Salzburg Austria, Home of Mozart & The Sound of Music
Home of Mozart and location for the movie “The Sound of Music”, Salzburg was a bit of a last minute choice for a stopover on our journey from Lauterbrunnen to Prague. Well, what a gorgeous place! The hotel was top stuff too (found on booking.com) - Hotel Wolf Dietrich and the attention to detail was superb. I guess we got a last minute deal, because it was fabulous value too. The indoor pool and relaxation area (complete with silence room) was like something you’d find in a house in Hollywood (but tasteful. ha) Elana, I know you will be disappointed to learn that we didn’t have time for the SOM tour but we have been singing “doe, a deer..a female deer, ray, a drop of golden suuuunnnnn…” – and Sasha knows the words now.We visited the Fortress on the hill and walked up, instead of taking the little train (for wimps!) We find
ourselves saying a lot on this trip, “lucky we are doing this while we are young!” (well, kinda…) We got a brilliant view from up there. The exhibitions were great too – including a nice display of torture masks, irons and a medieval chastity belt! In Salzburg, we also couldn’t believe the difference in prices, from the window shopping we (Lois) did. Much cheaper than Switzerland (but where isn’t?) Some retail therapy was had in Esprit. Pity we had to move on so soon… We vowed to return someday, with more spending money and a better exchange rate

Wonderful place. I remember lounging 5 years ago in one of their plazas/courtyards watching a bunch of friendly old men playing chess with those 2-3 foot tall chess pieces, with the fortress as the backdrop. I too chose the sing-the-song-in-my-head approach, versus going on the tour, as the late night partying with new-found hostel buddies didn’t allow me time for any morning tours.
