Recharge in Prague
We arrived in Prague from Salzburg. Having travelled by trains in France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Austria, it was a “blast from the past” to be in an old Czech train with a bench seat compartment, bouncing along the track. The apartment we had booked was fabulous, in the Jewish quarter near old town, and a good 15-20 minute walk to a great shopping centre (where we wore a path in the old cobblestones) as we shopped for food almost every day!
Prague was an amazing city with incredible architecture. We did have a laugh standing in the old town square waiting for the clock to tick over on the hour….there were hordes of tourists (as Ed proclaims…we aren’t tourists, we are global citizens!) and the result was a bit of clanging, a creepy statue looking like he was pulling the bell…and that was about it. I smiled as I thought (a bit longingly) of our beloved London Court clock with St George doing his thing, in the Hay Street Mall and the tourists who would stop and take photos of it.
Prague became a bit of a rest stop for us. Beyond halfway on our trip by now, we needed a “holiday from the holiday” and a bit of “home away from home”. A bit of homesickness crept in and we had some work to do. It ended up being a blessing that we were in the one place, with plenty of space and could deal with things. The wifi was the speediest on the trip thus far, which we found surprising as many things about Prague were still a little…um…quaint(?). We laughed at the 80’s music which played in the shops and on TV video hits. (Actually, we rather enjoyed it!)
The food…well, they like their potatoes, we had a meal of goulash (but discovered upon eating it that it had offal in it. uurgh…) Lots of meaty, stews, dumplings etc were on offer. As we had a fully equipped apartment, we took advantage of this, hence the daily pilgrimage to the shopping centre supermarket. It was nice to revisit all the Keay-Smith classics as well as Ed’s new addition “Tuscan chicken” which has become the signature dish of the trip.
We had a brilliant night out with Ed’s friend Brandon who cooked for us and his friends (yummy Thai) at his apartment. We had a great time singing away to Cold Chisel’s Khe Sahn
Onto New York, on a flight from Prague via Amsterdam…
