Blair Atholl & Loch Ness
All things Scottish at the Blair Atholl Gala Evening / Killiecrankie
We went across the road to Memorial Park for the special “Gala Evening” in Blair Atholl and arrived on the scene just in time to follow the all-female Blair Atholl pipe band in. Terrific.
Then we were treated to Scottish dancing, Clydesdales, vaulting (acrobatics on horses), a sheep shearing demonstration by hand and firing of muskets.
It was great to wander around amongst tourists and locals, many with their dogs. One family had a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Millie, who was promptly set upon by the three of us! (Missing our little Sophie-dog…boo-hoo) We have found though, that asking to pat someone’s dog is a great little conversation starter and we have had some nice chats with the locals (and their pooches).
Keay-Smith cranky…at Killiecrankie
Killiecrankie – a fair walk, with “Soldiers Leap” lookout across the burn. Ed wanted to do this (Ed and Lois had been before). Sasha wasn’t at all keen (we’d already done a fair bit of walking), Lois wasn’t all that bothered. Ed insisted…so we all went. It poured with rain and we all got soaked (even with wet weather gear) It was excellent though…we climbed down to the pebbled shoreline, fossicked for pebbles and skipped stones.
Fort Augustus at Loch Ness
We have landed in a lovely spot. The apartment we got quite cheap as the site is currently under development and resembles a building site. It is the old Abbey where the monks used to reside and is being converted into apartments for the Highland Club. Just around the corner from the Calendonian Canal Lock and overlooking Loch Ness.Great place, we all decided on day two that we could live here, well…in the summer months. Divine.
Lois went for an early morning walk to the Loch and sat on the outcrop with the sun shining down….aaahhh. It was flat like black glass….and noone around except for two white swans and their cygnets. We all enjoyed a cruise on Loch Ness on a gorgeous day (no rain, until the afternoon). No signs of Nessie…thought we saw something but t’was just the waves playing tricks.
Around the property there are vast amounts of bunnies and rabbit holes. Sash has a great time spotting and naming all the bunnies (shades of Watership Down).
